Looking up at the royal arch in Boulder, Colorado as it comes into view

What’s in a name? Is the Royal Arch deserving of its regal title? Or, is it a misnomer for another rocky outcrop on the landscape?

Nestled in the foothills of Boulder, Colorado, lies a gateway to the sky so majestic that it’s ‘Royal.’

Read on as we delve into the storied history, hike, and the origins of the name “Royal Arch”.

A Throne of Stone

The Royal Arch is a testament to the forces of nature and time. It sits along a geological fold within the Flatirons. Sculpted over millennia by wind, water, and the relentless march of the elements. Shape by the hands of time.

A Trail Steeped in History

The Royal Arch has been a beacon for adventurers since the 1880s. The earliest photos recorded visitation by Boulder locals wearing full Victorian attire. It’s hard to imagine women in long dresses and men in coats and ties navigating what is now a rugged hiking trail. But, that’s exactly how it began.

Fast forward to 1898. The first official trail was blazed. Making the arch accessible to those seeking to stand under its grandeur.

The City of Boulder recognized the value of this natural wonder and secured the land in 1920. It became part of the now-famous Boulder Mountain Park. This move preserved the arch for generations to come. It’s a testament to the community’s dedication to conservation and outdoor recreation.

The Hike: A Coronation of Effort

Conquering the Royal Arch trail is a rite of passage for Boulderites and visitors alike. Described as a “stair-stepper” by many. It’s a moderate to difficult hike that spans approximately 3.9 miles round-trip. And an elevation gain of 1,469 feet. It’s a true test of endurance, but the rewards are fit for royalty.

You’ll pass by the base of the Third Flatiron. Scramble over boulders, if you’re short like me. And navigate more than a few switchbacks. You’re not walking a path; you’re following in the footsteps of history. Every step bringing you closer to panoramic views that overlooks the city of Boulder. You can see as far as the Eastern Plains, and on a clear day, the Denver skyline.

The Origins of a Royal Name

So, why the “Royal” Arch? The name is as enigmatic as the arch is alluring. One could speculate that the sheer grandeur of the arch itself inspired the name. It towers over 30 feet. And, frames the the sky in a display that commands respect. It evokes a sense of awe akin to that of royalty.

Another theory suggests that the name was born from the arch’s position within the Boulder Flatirons. It rules over the landscape with a stately presence that is impressable. Some have called it a royal crown.

Speculating is fun, but the history is clear:

“Royal Arch was first discovered by Lawrence Bass of Boulder and was named around the turn of the century by Edwin Chamberlin, one of the original organizers of the Rocky Mountain Climbers Club. Chamberlin was an ardent Mason, studying for his Royal Arch degree. One morning while hiking, his companion looked up at the distinctive rock formation and said, ‘Edwin, there is your Royal Arch.’” (From the History of Boulder Mountain Parks by Mary Reilly-McNellan.)

Fun fact since this is a photography blog. Lawrence Bass was well known for his photography. Especially, his photos documenting the 1894 flood.
